In 1913, the first ever airplane landed in "Eretz Yisrael" (Israel);
it was flown by a French aviator Jules Vedrines on his way from Paris to Cairo, and today we celebrate 100 years of aviation since that pioneering landing on the Tel-Aviv beach.
This exhibition presents photographs commemorating a few milestones and anecdotes from the long and rich history of the civil aviation in Israel.
The photographs - some of them very old - are presented in a chronological order symbolizing the great evolution of the Israeli civil aviation.
From its first days, the civil aviation in Israel was interlinked with the Zionist ethos and symbolized the technological progress. The airplanes were called "The Iron Birds", and the pilots -"The Knights of the Skies". In 1934, the first civil airfield was inaugurated in Haifa, and two
years later a new international airport was opened in Lod (Lydda).
As years went by, Israeli airline companies were established, the slow and short-ranged airplanes were replaced with huge airliners crossing continents and oceans, and outdated airfields gave way to the modern aviation facilities we are enjoying today. During the next year, we will celebrate a decade since the opening of Terminal 3 in the Ben-Gurion International Airport; a new layout of runways will become operational; the construction of the new control tower will be completed; and one of the most modern new security inspection systems in the world will start its services. Also, the building of the new Assaf and Ilan Ramon Airport in Timna, near Eilat, will be continued.
There is no doubt that Terminal 3 in Ben-Gurion International Airport in Israel is the most appropriate place for this exhibition which overwhelms us with nostalgic feelings, reflects past and present events, and alludes to the future to come.
