Sustainability

In 2008 the IAA’s board of directors decided to formulate a strategic plan for the promotion of BGAP as a “green” airport. The goals of the plan included reaching a gradual and ongoing improvement in all the environmental indicators relevant to the IAA’s activity. In light of the plan’s broad implications, along with the public aspects it involved and the need to lead work crews including many elements from both BGAP and the IAA, a supreme steering committee was established in order to lead and support the advancement of the plan’s execution. This committee included top level officials and professionals from the management of the IAA and BGAP, and was headed by the IAA’s CEO. The steering committee deals with three fields: aircraft noise, the prevention of infrastructure related pollution and resource conservation. Several professional action teams operate in each field, with the Environmental Department responsible for the coordination of the teams’ operation and the advancement of their activities.

Work Teams in the Environmental Field

 Water and Sewage
Preventing pollutants from entering the sewage system
Reducing the overall cost of water usage and waste treatment
Optimizing and reducing the use of water in the operation of BGAP and other IAA facilities
Finding avenues for the use of all the surplus of waste water
Optimizing and reducing the use of water by franchisees and partners of the BGAP
       wastewater treatment facility

 Waste and Recycling

Reducing the amount of waste created in BGAP
Separating and recycling a substantial amount of the waste
Reducing the overall costs of waste treatment
Preparing for future regulations meant to increase the rate of recycling
Making franchisees and other elements at BGAP a part of the activities
Sharing the waste recycling activities with passengers
Expanding the activity to regional cooperation and border crossings

The Prevention of Fuel Related Pollution

The prevention of environmental hazards caused by fuel leaks from IAA facilities

The Prevention of Pollution Caused by Hazardous Materials

Ensuring the facilities follow all the relevant laws and regulations
Preparing for additional regulations and requirements
The prevention of environmental hazards caused by leaks and spills of hazardous materials

 Resource Conservation

  Energy Conservation:

Continuing activities for optimizing energy use.
Activities for the promotion of clean energy sources and production
Combining between economic and environmental goals, according to the current and future
regulations set forth by the Israel Electric Company and the Public Utility Authority –
        Electricity
Optimizing the operative array while also minimizing the environmental footprint created by
the IAA’s facilities, by taking such actions as shortening the aircraft positioning distance and
improving the land transportation array at BGAP

  Green Construction:

Setting green construction principles as the binding standard for every IAA building project
Implementing these principles and raising awareness to green construction
Preparing procedures and a planning guide for all planning authorities in the IAA.

  Green Acquisition:

Implementing green acquisition principles as the guiding standard in all IAA activities
Preparing a guiding procedure for environmental thinking in the preparation of acquisition
        specifications
Adjusting all acquisition specifications to green acquisition principles
