A joint project of the Israel Airports Authority, the Company for Community Centers, the Ministry of the Environment and the local authorities, in which the IAA subsidizes the participation of disadvantaged children in summer camps, is underway
Thousands of schoolchildren from the Ben Gurion Airport area are taking part this year in summer camps focusing on the subjects of aviation and quality of the environment, subsidized by the Israel Airports Authority, and as part of the IAA’s activities for the community - the informal education framework. On Sunday, July 2nd, 2006, the "Flying Summer Camps" – thematic camps on aviation and quality of the environment – opened in Or Yehuda, Azor, Yehud, Holon, Rishon Lezion and Eilat.
The project, jointly conducted by the Israel Airports Authority, the Company for Community Centers, the Ministry of the Environment and the local authorities, is now in its 5th year. Within its framework, the IAA subsidizes the participation of disadvantaged children in the summer camps. The subsidy amounts to about 10,000 NIS for each of the towns and cities involved, totaling approximately 120,000 NIS per year.
As part of the summer camp, the children take part in activities related to aviation and the environment, learn about the history of aviation and about topics related to the environment, such as bird migration, kites, noise & aviation, space & air pollution.
The IAA conducted a special one-day seminar for the summer camp instructors, providing the instructors with training in topics related to aviation and environment, including over 200 activities on the subject.
In addition, IAA held an "Aviation Day" for all participants of the Flying Summer Camps, which took place at Ben Gurion Airport, on July 12th, 2006. This was a day filled with fun and excitement, including a tour of the operational areas and building flying models. The day ended with a flight of over one thousand models made by the young camp goers.
