On Sunday, 10 June 2007, at the Karni Terminal operated by Israel Airports Authority, some six thousand 9 mm bullets were found during a security check of goods transported from Israel into Gaza.
The bullets were discovered during an X-ray check of electrical appliances, stashed away inside a TV set, an oven and a washing machine. The driver of the commercial vehicle, an Israeli resident of East Jerusalem, who had transported the goods from Judea & Samaria into Israel, was detained by the Netivot police for further questioning and for questioning by the security forces.
Says IAA CEO Gabi Ofir: "Technological means at the Karni Terminal Crossing have been reinforced, and since 2006 we have begun investing a sum of about NIS156 million in protective measures and technologies."
It should be noted that in the past two weeks alone, an assortment of means for the production of Kassam rockets were found at the Karni Crossing, including a lathe and pipes 70 cm long and 75 mm in diameter, originating in Israel.
The Karni terminal is located about 2 km west of kibbutz Nahal Oz, in the north of the Gaza Strip. It is the only civilian point of contact between the Gaza Strip and Israel, and serves as a strategic meeting point for three central "players": Israel, the Palestinians and the international community.
