Passover 2007 - An expected ten percent increase in passenger traffic at Ben Gurion Airport
( Spokesperson Announcements  19/03/2007)

According to IAA forecast, more than 947,000 people are expected to pass through Ben Gurion Airport in April; in addition, substantial tourist traffic is expected at the Taba and Arava Border Terminals

Passenger traffic this Passover is expected to reflect an increase of about ten percent relative to 2006, with some 477,000 incoming passengers and 469,361 outgoing passengers during the month of April. Passenger traffic at Ben Gurion Airport is expected to peak on Sunday, April 1st, with 47,700 passengers, and Thursday, April 12th, with 43,380 passengers.

The city of Eilat is also preparing for an influx of tourists and visitors during the Passover holiday. During the week of Passover alone, about 650 takeoffs and landings, carrying around 30,000 passengers, are expected at Eilat Airport. Ovda Airport expects about 77 incoming and outgoing flights, bringing around 6,000 tourists, mostly from England and France.

A great deal of passenger traffic is also expected at Israel's land border crossings at Taba and Arava. About 90,000 people are expected to pass through Taba Terminal during April - a number similar to that of last year. The lively traveler traffic at the terminal consists mostly of tourists entering and leaving Sinai, including Christian pilgrims leaving Israel for the Santa Katerina Monastery, and Greek Orthodox who go to the Sinai Peninsula for Easter, which falls at the same time as Passover. The Yitzhak Rabin (Arava) Terminal, on the border with Jordan, is expected to handle some 22,557 people during the Passover holiday and the whole of April.

Israel Airports Authority CEO Gabi Ofir said that "all IAA facilities - the airports, domestic airfields and border terminals - are ready for the increased passenger traffic over Passover. We do everything in our power to provide the best possible service to passengers. In addition, this year passengers taking domestic flights to Eilat will be able to enjoy the upgraded Terminal 1 which was opened in mid-February."
