Every day about 30 tons of waste are collected in Ben Gurion Airport.
In 2002, the IAA promoted detailed planning and preparation of a tender to construct a new transit station for waste, to comply with all the standards of the Ministry of the Environment. The station will be erected near to the WWTP planned for the southern part of BGN. The detailed planning stage is accompanied by an environmental execution document.
The system for collecting and disposing of waste is the responsibility of the Ground Services Wing in the BGN's Operations Division. The main sources of waste in the airport are aircraft, the offices and the restaurant services in the airport, including the food preparation facilities for aircraft, the shops and the operators of the cargo terminals.
Waste is sent to the current transit station at BGN and compressed before being conveyed to the disposal site.
Recycling
Paper recycling: in 2002 about 52 tons of office paper were collected in IAA facilities for recycling. Recently the paper collection system has been streamlined and improved. Office staff were equipped with personal collection containers and briefed with the aim of increasing awareness of the importance of recycling in general, and of recycling paper in particular.
Cardboard recycling: the shops, and particularly the duty free shops, are a source of cardboard packaging. At packaging centers this cardboard is compressed and collected for recycling.
Battery recycling: in the various office buildings at Ben Gurion Airport decorative containers were placed to collect batteries. Collection of batteries was made possible thanks to IAA joining the battery collection arrangements of the local authorities, which is funded by the Ministry of the Environment.
