Alternative sources of energy
In 2002 the Airports Authority began looking into converting the diesel generators in the Energy Center to use natural gas as an alternative for supplying electricity in Ben Gurion Airport. Natural gas is considered a relatively cheap source of energy, environmentally friendly and with a high degree of utilization. Consequently, its emissions of pollutants are smaller than those of other fuels.
Converting the generators to natural gas should generate savings of about 12%, compared to use of other alternative energy sources. The IAA investigation is taking place simultaneously with the finalizing of a national master plan for gas conduction (Plan 37), now in the process of getting approvals from planning institutions. The plan includes convenient connection points to Ben Gurion Airport.
