Wastewater treatment

Installation of an independent wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at Ben Gurion Airport

In 2002 the National Council for Planning & Construction completed a process of changing the master plan of Ben Gurion Airport, which paved the way for the installation of an independent WWTP at the airport.

The WWTP will operate using the membrane bioreactor method.  This is one of the most advanced purification facilities in technological terms.  The flow of treated water produced by the facility can be applied to unlimited uses and in future will save about one million cubic meters of high quality water every year.

The change in the master plan was accompanied by a review of the effect on the environment, which defined the qualities of wastewater and treated water from the future facility.  Wastewater from the Aircraft Industries, El Al and Ben Gurion Airport will reach the facility.

At the same time, a process of detailed planning and preparation of a tender for construction of the WWTP began.  The detailed planning stage will be accompanied by a document specifying environmental execution.

The Planning & Engineering Division set up a special office to coordinate the construction of the WWTP.  The cost of the project, which is planned to be completed by the beginning of 2005, is estimated at over NIS40 million.

Upgrade of the existing purification facility

Considering the decisions taken regarding the future of waste water purification at Ben Gurion Airport, and in view of the fact that the new advanced facility will start operating at the beginning of 2005, that is, in another two years, the IAA was required to upgrade as far as possible the existing facility in which waste water is treated by aeration and oxygenation basins.

The upgrade carried out during the year by the Maintenance Division included installation of a bar screen, the addition of aerators to improve the oxygenation process, cleaning the pools of sludge, and transferring it to the Ramat Hovav site.

Wastewater survey

A wastewater survey is carried out as one of the most important databases for planning the new WWTP at BGN and as a means of controlling and treating industrial waste water, before it is sent to the treatment facility.

The survey includes sampling wastewater flows at BGN and analyzing all the elements in the waste water that could affect the efficient operation of the purification facility.

In addition, the survey is a means for controlling the efficiency of the pre-treatment facilities for industrial wastewater, originating from the Aircraft Industries and El Al, before it reaches the facility.
