Terminal 1 for Passengers on Domestic Flights

The new domestic flights terminal is located in the Terminal 1 building at Ben Gurion Airport (formerly used for international flights).

The way to the terminal is signposted, starting at the airport’s entrance gates.

The terminal comprises several passenger halls and operational areas, all built on one level, covering a total area of about 7,686 sq.m.: A security check and check-In hall, a departures hall for passengers waiting to board their flight, an arrivals hall and a greeters' hall.

The guiding principle in the interior design of the renovated Terminal 1 was creating a visual impact with a Land-of-Israel atmosphere, by using local materials, light, color and visual effects, which would set it apart from the universal run-of-the-mill type of terminal.

Architect Yosef Assa, who designed the terminal, wished to create in the three main spaces three different "atmospheres", expressed through different artistic means.

  • First atmosphere – giving the terminal a Land-of-Israel character. This principle finds its expression in the public hall painted in colors typical to Israel's Judean, Jerusalem and Galilee mountains.
  • Second atmosphere – creating a feeling of vacation and leisure in the Bell Hall (the Departures Hall where passengers wait before boarding their flights). An atmosphere of seashores, vacation, and nature.
  • The third atmosphere – back to the urban metropolis; giving the feeling of back to the city and everyday life, in the Arrivals Hall.
  • Arriving passengers enter the Arrivals Hall through a spacious corridor with walls covered with ceramic tiles forming an urban silhouette, combined with well-lit windows and lighting fixtures. All these give a "back-to-the-city" feel.

The choice of materials:

  • The floor is of earth and rock colors, accentuating the motif of Land-of-Israel tones.
  • Light shades were chosen for walls and ceilings.
  • The walls are painted with works of art, decorated with Carrara marble sails, lit with computerized LED that changes its colors according to daylight and nighttime lighting.

Entrance to the hall is from Gate no. 2 at the front of the terminal.

The Hall is used for security check and flight check-in.

The terminal is all on one level (on the ground floor), enabling passengers to go through the entire arrival or departure process  - from arriving at the terminal to boarding the shuttle, or vice versa, from landing to leaving the terminal – with ease.

Passengers with disabilities who need special transport to or from the aircraft should inform the airline or the travel agent upon making their reservation for the flight.

The facilities at the terminal are compatible with accessibility standards.
