Letter from the Managing Director of Ben-Gurion  Airport

Dear Passengers, Tourists, Visitors and Customers of Ben-Gurion Airport.

Ben-Gurion International Airport is the air gateway to Israel. This is the symbol and the message that that we have tried to convey at Terminal 3 which, from its opening on November 4, 2004 until today, has seen the arrival and departure of some 40 million passengers on 295 thousand flights, plus some 43 million greeters and well wishers, not forgetting the employees.

2008 at Ben-Gurion Airport was a record year in international passenger and air traffic, in the course of which 11 million international passengers and 82,648 flights passed through the airport. Plans for 2009 are for the arrival and departure of 9.5 million international passengers on some 80,000 flights, plus some 12 million greeters and well wishers.

2009 began with a global economic crisis that has also affected airline companies and airports. At Ben-Gurion Airport, the crisis has resulted in a reduction of some 10% in the number of passengers and some 5% in the number of flights. We are doing our utmost to maintain the economic viability of the Israel Airports Authority during the current crisis.

During the past year, a survey was conducted among passengers and well wishers, in order to examine the quality of service at the airport. The survey was conducted by the Airports Council International (ACI), an organization encompassing the world's airports. According to this survey Ben-Gurion Airport is ranked first among airports in the Middle East and second in the world among airports with 5-15 million passengers a year. This is the second year running that these prestigious awards have been given to Ben-Gurion Airport. The ranking is based on the results of some 200,000 satisfaction questionnaires completed by passengers and well wishers throughout the world. The survey examines and compares 34 service points in the procedure for the departing and arriving passengers and for their well wishers at the airport.

ZAGAT magazine ranked Ben-Gurion Airport 4th in the world, and the CONDE NAST TRAVELLER magazine ranked Ben-Gurion Airport 2nd in the world among non-US airports.

These awards indicate the international recognition which we receive from organizations, magazines and our customers, all of which acknowledge Ben-Gurion Airport as one of the leading airports in the world.

This recognition also extends to the employees of Ben-Gurion Airport, who are considered among the first rank of professionals operating airports worldwide, and I sincerely thank the managers and the employees of all the sectors.

Ben-Gurion Airport is a “city” in every respect.  It is a source of income for thousands of families. Within the confines of Ben-Gurion Airport, some 10,000 service providers are employed: employees of the Israel Airports Authority; airline employees; Government Ministry employees; concessionaires; as well as contractors dealing with passenger-care, cargo handling, aircraft maintenance, commercial activities and infrastructure improvement. Ben-Gurion Airport is therefore one of the largest economic and employment centers in the country.

For many Israelis, Terminal 3 is a source of national pride as the country's representative airport. Tourists are also very impressed with the new terminal, its design and the quality of the services it provides.

We, the employees of the Israel  Airports Authority at Ben-Gurion Airport, are committed to providing passengers, well wishers, aircraft and pilots with security, safety, and the highest level of service. The improvements are on going and we are continuing to add facilities and technologies that will upgrade the level of service, safety and security.

The Israel Airports Authority invests hundreds of millions of US $ in operations, in the development of aviation infrastructures, and in the various improvements. The financing for this is covered by the airport’s income, mainly from commercial activities, such as revenue from the duty free shops, various concession fees, and passenger and aircraft levies. We give the citizens of Israel and the tourists full value for the fees and taxes that they pay, by providing a high level of service and investing constantly in improving service, security and safety.

We the employees of Ben-Gurion Airport, from all sectors, welcome all those passing through our gates. We will treat you with the courtesy and respect you deserve and will do our best to ensure that Ben-Gurion Airport continues to maintain its reputation as one of the best airports in the world.

I wish you a safe and pleasant flight.

Yours,

Zeev Sarig

Managing Director, Ben-Gurion Airport.
